With just eight days to go for the Bukit Selambau by-election in Kedah, PKR has been dealt a blow with the resignation of its Jerai division chief B Kalaivanar with some 500 supporters today.

Kalaivanar is also peeved that Anwar had overlooked him as candidate for the state seat, saying that the opposition leader had forgotten all that the former did for the party.

“I am very unhappy with Anwar and PKR. The party has not done anything for the Indian community,” he told a press conference at a golf club in Sungai Petani.

“With the greatest regret, I would like to inform the media here that I am leaving the party and resigning from my position as division leader.

“I am also abolishing the committee for the progress of the Indian community which was formed by the division,” he added.

Kalaivanar said about 100 members in the division as well as 359 members of the committee had also resigned from the party.

Amongst those who followed Kalaivanar in resigning are PKR’s state deputy Wanita chief and Sungai Petani councillor K Deivanai and Yan councillor S Poobalan as well as five village heads.

The real Pharaoh

Kalaivanar, who has been active in politics since the age of 19, said Pakatan’s idea of forming an united ‘Bangsa Malaysia’ was simply a ’sweet word and fake promise’ to garner votes.

“They (PKR) have become ungrateful… Anwar does not have an ounce of respect for those who have fought for this party,” he added.

Moreover, he said Pakatan had “deceived and used the people especially the Indian community like curry leaves but did nothing beneficial for them.”

“Pakatan always condemns BN and Umno but what have they done for the Indian community? There is not one Indian senator in the states administered by them,” he added.

But at the same time, hinted that they would not campaign for PKR candidate S Manikumar or any of the 13 independent candidates. This leaves only BN candidate S Ganesan.

Although he kept repeating that he had no comments about Manikumar, Kalaivanar however said: “The first guy (referring to former rep V Arumugam) was a coward and ran away without doing anything for the people… now they have picked a soft character, so that they could manipulate him.”

Greets Muhyiddin

The 45-year-old politician also urged Anwar to refrain from using gimmicks to lure Indian votes like calling himself ‘Sivaji the Boss’ - a blockbuster Tamil movie about a man who battles against corruption.

Kalaivanar also said he was ’sick’ of Anwar’s tactics in using terms like ‘makkal sakthi’ (people’s power) during rallies.

His resignation letter had been sent to PKR president and Anwar’s wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as well as the secretary-general. The Registrar of Societies had also been notified about the dissolution of the committee of Indian affairs.

Kalaivanar had previously claimed that he stood a good chance of winning the seat as since he has strong grassroots support, especially among the Indian community.

He stood as a candidate for the Gurun state seat in the last general election but lost.

After the press conference, Kalaivanar approached newly minted Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin who was having lunch at the same venue and shook his hand. Siva: It’s a normal reaction

Meanwhile PKR vice president R Sivarasa in an immediate response said Kalaivanar’s resignation was a normal reaction by any leader disgruntled who had not been selected to contest.

“Voters are sophisticated nowadays. They know what in this case, it is nothing more than Kalainavar being disgruntled over not getting picked as the candidate to contest.

“Kalaivanar is only saying all this after he has been denied from contesting. He would have had more credibility should he had say all these things before knowing his wish to contest had been turned down,” he said.

He added that it was important for party members to stick with the party for “its beliefs and principles and not only to get seats.”
